Our Mission. Our high school was named Norman Thomas in tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of social and economic justice. He taught respect for the people who provide their human labor for economic purposes. This philosophical concept is the underpinning of the operation of our school. It is the mission of Norman Thomas High School to prepare students to be literate, caring, questioning and critically thinking members of society through a rigorous academic and business curriculum. Our young people will be prepared to meet the academic and technological demands of the 21st century, thereby enabling them to succeed in college and the business world. We recognize that our mission also extends to new populations in the mainstream of American life.
Courses & Program Highlights. Our business focus attracts students in four major areas: Accounting, Marketing, Office Technology and Travel & Tourism. The capstone for all Business Programs is our Virtual Enterprise firms, which successfully incorporate all majors in virtual businesses. We offer advanced Placement courses in Biology, Calculus, Spanish, European History, United States History, English Literature and English Language. We offer Bilingual instruction in Spanish and Chinese in all subject areas. With the implementation of an Introductory Course in Business for all incoming students, we hope to insure that students are best able to understand their position of a major and even change it, should they choose to do so. Our “Dress for Success” day, where students must dress in business attire one day per week, insures that all students are ready for interviews and internships whenever they become available.
