Dear Parents, Students, Faculty, and Guests:

It is a great pleasure to reach you through this mode of communication. I would like to begin by introducing myself. My name is Benny Ureña, Foreign Languages and ESL Assistant Principal. During these two last years, I have led a team of professional teachers in curriculum reform, as well as developing a Foreign Languages Department that is revered by the School Administration. I have provided leadership in and outside the classroom.

The Foreign Languages Department at Norman Thomas High School has been undergoing drastic changes. At the present time, I supervise both the Foreign Language and ESL Staff. Our office is located on the 3rd floor, room 306. Now, we are home to a computerized Language Laboratory, thanks to the tremendous effort of the teachers. Thanks to those who contributed.

Our mission is to prepare and educate students to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, responsible and respectable citizens. It is our duty as educators to prepare them to become successful and active citizens within our society. It is, indeed, up to our community leaders, parents, community, teachers and school administrators to prepare students to: meet the new standards and new challenges of the 21st century, function in the new worldwide competitive and growing technological marketplace, promote their best inner-self, and to become productive role models and leaders within their communities.

Distinguidos padres, estudiantes, profesores e invitados:

Es un gran placer llegar hasta ustedes a través de este medio. Ante todo, me gustaría darme a conocer. Soy Benny Ureña, supervisor del Departamento de Idiomas y de ESL (Inglés Como Segundo Idioma).  Durante estos dos años he dirigido un grupo de pedagogos quienes han puesto al día el plan de estudios. Hoy, el Departamento de Idiomas es reconocido por la administración como uno de los departamentos más progresistas y mejor organizados de la escuela. Contamos con un laboratorio de idiomas computarizado, gracias al arduo trabajo de los profesores. Muchísimas gracias a todos aquellos que, de una manera u otra, contribuyeron con este logro.

El Departamento de Idiomas se ha ido reformando poco a poco. Éste está localizado en el tercer piso, salón 306. Continuaremos  presentando nuevas propuestas que enriquezcan el presente currículo de español para nativos.

Nuestra misión es educar y preparar a los jóvenes para que sean pensadores críticos, capaces de resolver problemas personales y públicos; que sean ciudadanos respetables y responsables ante la sociedad que ellos representan. Es responsabilidad de los padres, educadores, administradores escolares, ciudadanos en general y líderes municipales prepararlos para que tengan éxito y que sean ciudadanos activos dentro del campo laboral y cívico. Es nuestro deber como comunidad preparar a nuestros jóvenes para afrontar los retos futuros que demanda una sociedad orientada hacia el campo tecnológico, académico y laboral.

Espero contar con la ayuda de todos para nuestros jóvenes.
