Career & Technology Education. ...YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR BUSINESS.
The Department of Career & Technology Education serves the largest number of students at Norman Thomas High School. In fact, it is the largest high school department of its kind in New York City. Comprised of 21 full-time faculty members under my direction, it serves as the theme for attracting students to the school. Classes are offered in Accounting, Business Law, Microsoft Office Applications, Desktop Publishing, Web-Page Design, Medical Office Technology, Logistics, and Travel & Tourism.
Our department has been recognized for our accomplishments in procuring over 3-million dollars in grants and in developing professional affiliations with members of the business community. Faculty members serve as club advisors to award-winning chapters of Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The department hosts two Virtual Award-Winning Businesses run by students: ACT Professional Services and Not Just Flowers.
We pioneered the development of a rigorous standards-based curriculum in accordance with guidelines established by the NY State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA). We maintain active professional affiliations with The Greater New York City Council of Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement, and Deloitte & Touche as well as an articulation agreement with Pace University.
Our students participate in many School-to-Career initiatives such as the Cooperative Education and the Executive Internship programs. We have managed to increase the number of our students that earn Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certificate. We were also successful launching the unique Student Technologist In Residence (STIR) initiative designed to qualify students for A+ computer maintenance certification from the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).
